Mother of girl, 7, shot in head during argument speaks out

Girl taken to University Hospital, listed in critical condition

SAN ANTONIO – A 7-year-old girl was shot in the head during an argument late Saturday night in Kerrville.

The girl was identified by family members Sunday night as Mariah Gilkey.

Officials with the Kerrville Police Department said Gilkey’s father was arguing with a man at the intersection of West Schreiner Street and Paschal Avenue around 9:30 p.m. when another group of unknown people fired several rounds at the vehicle he was in with Gilkey.

Police said Gilkey’s father realized she was bleeding and drove a half mile to the intersection of Schreiner and Sidney Baker where he encountered officers headed to the shooting scene.

Gilkey was transported to University Hospital in San Antonio, where she was listed in critical condition.

Gilkey’s mother, Isabel Gebara, spoke to KSAT Sunday evening about the shooting. She said Gilkey is recovering from surgery at the hospital.

Gebara said she had just gotten off work when she heard the news. Her family thinks they know who was responsible for the shooting.

“The guy had shot my husband like two years ago,” Gebara said.

“I just want justice for our Mariah. She doesn't deserve to be sitting in that bed fighting for her life,” said Monica Hinojosa, Mariah's grandmother.

Police said the shooting is under investigation. Officials have not released any details about possible suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kerrville Police Department or local authorities.
