Homeowner left to clean up mess after VIA bus crashes into house

Another truck crashed into bus, sending bus into home

SAN ANTONIO – A VIA Metropolitan bus crashed into a home on San Antonio’s Southwest Side Monday afternoon.

The home is located in the 6100 block of Haven Valley Drive.

Aerial video from Sky 12 shows the bus sandwiched between two palm trees, and the front of it inside one of the rooms of the home.

“The whole room just broke apart and I was able to push something aside and get out of the door before the bus was completely in the room. I'm pretty sure it would have killed me," Landon Lum, who was inside the home at the time, said.

The collision occurred just before 4 p.m.

"I checked the vehicles to make sure everybody was OK," Lum said.

VIA released the following statement:

A vehicle and a bus made contact on Monday, after the driver of the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the bus, forcing it off the roadway. No passengers were aboard the bus at the time. VIA is working with San Antonio police to investigate the incident. VIA is committed to the safety of its passengers, staff, and the traveling public.

The San Antonio Fire Department worked for about two hours to stabilize the house before driving the bus out.

"There's a lot of things we need to do like secure the utilities to make sure there's no electrical hazards and then they stabilize the structure so there's no collapse," second battalion Chief Brian O'Neill said.

The house was declared uninhabitable. The homeowner said he will stay at a hotel.
