Iconic SA sports destination closing

Fatso's in business for nearly 30 years

An iconic sports destination on the city's Northwest Side is closing its doors this week.

Steve Wilkinson, owner of Fatso's Sports Garden, said that Friday will be the last night the public can enjoy the bar and restaurant. The facility will close at 6 p.m. Saturday to host a private event.

To Spurs fans, college students and even volleyball players, the business has it all when it comes to sports.

"It's that time," Wilkinson said, who has owned and operated the facility for nearly 30 years but is now retiring.

Weekly lunch patron Leslie Sanchez was shocked to hear the news.

"I like the variety of food that they have here and the staff are very friendly," Sanchez said.

The Wilkinson family broke the news on their Facebook page May 21.

"We didn't set out to do anything. It just happened," Wilkinson said about the venue's success over the years. The new owner plans to do something different with the property, although Wilkinson doesn't know what just yet.

"Thank you to San Antonio," Wilkinson said. "It's been a great run. It's been a lot of fun."

The Wilkinsons ran a volleyball league for years. They're asking everyone to pay a visit Friday at 7:30 p.m. for a final picture.
