Jenna Bush Hager surprises teachers with funds for classrooms

Funds will be split evenly between teachers at Passmore Elementary

SAN ANTONIO – Some San Antonio school teachers got a big surprise from former President George W. Bush's daughter.

Jenna Bush Hager paid a visit to Passmore Elementary Thursday and gave teachers money for school supplies. The money came from the National Nonprofit Propane Education and Research Council.

It was a $10,000 donation in recognition of Northside Independent School District’s commitment to student health and safety and environmental concerns with its operation of propane school buses.

The donation will be evenly split between all the teachers at the school, who will be able to buy classroom supplies through the nonprofit Adopt-A-Classroom's online shopping site.

"To take funds out of our own pocket to purchase for students, it's what we do. We do it willingly, but you know, it does affect us in terms of funds. We can provide for our own families, so this is huge. We are very grateful,” said Mary Gonzales, a teacher at Passmore.

Northside ISD has been operating propane school buses for the last three decades.
