Judge rules on District 120 state representative's place on ballot

Democratic Party accused State Rep. Laura Thompson of voter fraud

SAN ANTONIO – A judge ruled Thursday that State Rep. Laura Thompson can stay on the November ballot.

Thompson currently represents District 120, which was previously represented by Ruth Jones McClendon.  She won a special election earlier this year to replace McClendon.

Last week, the Bexar County Democratic Party accused Thompson of not getting enough signatures legally to get on the ballot for the general election.

The Democratic Party released this statement Thursday about the ruling:

"The Judge ruled that we have a case, but that it's too late and too costly to reprint new ballots. In effect, Mrs. Thompson got on the ballot by committing voter fraud that was not caught in time by the Secretary of State."

Thompson has said that she doesn’t know about any fraudulent signatures. She said the Secretary of State’s Office did eliminate some individuals for one reason or another.

Thompson is running against Democrat Barbara Gervin-Hawkins for the seat.
