Jury deliberates punishment in child killer's case

Matthew Carrillo found guilty in death of girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter

SAN ANTONIO – The grandmother of a slain 4-year-old girl testified in court Wednesday that she repeatedly tried to have the child removed from the home that her daughter shared with her live-in boyfriend.

"I did police reports. I called CPS," she said. "I tried everything to get her out of there, and I couldn't do anything."

The woman testified in the punishment phase of Matthew Carrillo, 28, who was found guilty Tuesday in the 2012 death of Kayla Garcia.

According to trial testimony, the girl suffered massive blunt force head trauma and other injuries consistent with a beating.

Jurors are deliberating punishment for Carillo, who may face up to life in prison.
