"Licensure of the Karnes County Residential Center ... represents an important step forward in ICE’s commitment to enhancing oversight and transparency of its family residential centers, which play an important role in maintaining the integrity of our immigration system," Jennifer Elzea, acting press secretary office of public affairs for ICE.

The license was granted while the federal government debates whether the detention facility will continue to operate.

A federal judge ruled last year that children should not stay at the facilities because they weren't licensed.

The population of the Karnes facility is 537.
