Residents bundle up to weather San Antonio's cold snap

Wind chill made morning temps in the mid-30s feel more like freezing

SAN ANTONIO – While the calendar may say it’s December, the thermometer doesn’t always agree in San Antonio.

Nature, though, appeared to have gotten the message Friday that it should feel more like winter.

Morning temperatures dipped into the low- to mid-30s. With the wind-chill factor, it felt like they had reached the freezing mark.

The predicted high for the day was only in the 40s.

"It's colder than I expected,” said Eric Rosas, who stepped outside briefly to walk his dog, Maddy. “Dogs don’t wait.

Rosas braved the weather in a wool jacket and turtleneck sweater but admits he didn’t think his pet would need a coat other than the one she’s had since she was born.

“I don't have to worry about it because she's usually running around, burning energy, so she usually makes herself warm,” Rosas said.

Roylene Williams, meanwhile, wore two coats as well as a scarf, gloves and a hat. "Cold. My hands are freezing,” she said. “Yeah, it's real cold out here.”

Williams works as a crossing guard at an elementary school just north of downtown.  She helped usher children across the street quickly and into their warm building Friday morning.  However, duty kept her from joining them indoors.

"It's part of the job,” Williams said. “I've been doing this since 2005."

The windy, chilly weather may have signaled to many people that winter is in the air.

However, to others, it seemed to be simply a refreshing change from the usual.

While those around them donned heavy clothing, some people were spotted sporting shorts.

“We’re fine,” said one unidentified woman. “We lived in Minnesota for a while.”
