Man arrested for 1999 sexual assault of 2 teenage girls

Police say man could be linked to other sexual assault cases

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police arrested a man named Frank Acosta for his involvement in the sexual assault of two teenage girls in 1999. Police believe he may have committed two other sexual assaults.

Police said Acosta, 36, approached two sisters, ages 14 and 15, who were headed to a movie theater. They said Acosta, then 17, pretended to be a police officer and ordered the girls to get in his car. He then allegedly drove the teenage girls to another location, where the victims said he sexually assaulted them at knifepoint.

“No, I didn’t do nothing to nobody, so I’m innocent,” Acosta said, while being transferred to the jail.

Police said the case went cold, but then got a little help from a national database that matched to not only the 1999 case, but also other cases in 2006 and 2010.

"The detectives were working other cases and they got notification of a CODIS hit. That’s the combined DNA information system. That’s the national database. Whenever there's any biological evidence that’s collected from these scenes, sexual assaults, homicides, anything like that, that information goes into a database that’s managed nationally," said Sgt. Jesse Salame, San Antonio police spokesman.

Acosta now faces two counts aggravated sexual assault. Police are still investigating the other crimes he could’ve possibly been involved with.

The suspect was out on bond for a misdemeanor assault charge last October. That case was set for trial in November.
