Man arrested in shooting at West Side barbershop

Karey Cox, 26, thought victim owed him money, police say

SAN ANTONIO – Karey Cox, 26, is accused of firing shots inside a West Side barbershop, wounding a worker who he thought owed him money.

San Antonio police arrested Cox Sunday in connection with the Sept. 29 shooting.

The arrest affidavit said that a 34-year-old man who worked at the barbershop, located in the 1200 block of SW Loop 410, was the victim and intended target of the shooting. He was hit one time, in the hand, the affidavit stated.

The affidavit said that witnesses told police that Cox stormed into the barbershop, demanding that the worker pay him money that he was owed. The victim said he told Cox he didn't owe him anything but still gave him all the money he had in his pockets.

Witnesses said Cox pulled a gun from his waistband and began firing hitting the worker in his hand, the affidavit said.

The victim also told police that when he saw Cox reach for the weapon, he pulled out his own gun and fired, the affidavit said.

Police said one witness recognized Cox as someone who had been to the barbershop before and was able to identify him as the shooter.

Cox was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault.
