SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio man was attacked by his neighbor's pit bull Wednesday in his own backyard.
It happened around 3 p.m. off of Fredericksburg Road and West Myrtle Street, just north of downtown.
Liz Shafer said her husband, Steven Shafer, is still in shock after getting attacked by the pit bull.
"My husband is going to need stitches on his mouth, his cheek, his ear," Liz Shafer said. "And there's another puncture by the ear that they cannot do anything about."
She said the neighbor's pit bull jumped the fence to get to her husband.
"We weren't even that close to the fence when the dog jumped over and got a hold of his face," Liz Shafer said. "It happened in an instant. It was just that quick."
Animal Care Services picked up the dog on Wednesday.
Liz Shafer said she is glad the dog was taken because not only did the pit bull jump the fence, he was still on a leash when it happened.
She said the leash was just long enough to allow the dog to get over the 7-foot fence.
"It's scary," she said. "It's very scary. You just never know how they're going to react, because my husband always talks to Chico. The dog's name is Chico. He's always like, 'It's OK Chico. It's just me,' The next thing you know, he jumped."
Shafer said her husband now has to get a series of rabies shots.
As far as what will happen to the dog's owner, Animal Care Services said it is still under investigation.
