According to the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, Poehlmann shot and killed Sanchez at his home in the 4200 block of First View Drive.
Poehlmann's sister said that the defendant and Sanchez got into an argument prior to the shooting, the DA's office said.
She also said the couple had a relationship in which they were "always fighting," the DA's office said.
Poehlmann denied the argument and said he was cleaning his gun when it "went off," the DA's office said.
The defendant was convicted in 2006 and 2009 of a felon in possession of a firearm.
