"This victim came to this location where the suspect lives and confronted him possibly about a stolen handgun," said Sgt. Javier Salazar, of the San Antonio Police Department.

Investigators said the 25-year-old suspect fled to his apartment after Widner confronted him, and Widner followed him. The suspect then grabbed a gun as Widner gave chase.

"The suspect made it almost to the bottom of the steps and actually jumped, landed somewhat awkwardly and rolled over on to his back, turned as the victim was coming down the stairs behind him and fired one shot striking the victim in the upper body," Salazar said.

Police responded to the shooting and officers found Widner's body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police took the suspected shooter into custody and continue to investigate.

"The circumstances of the offense as the detectives saw them didn't lend themselves to self-defense," said Salazar.

The shooter's name had not been released as of 7 a.m. Monday.
