SAN ANTONIO – A driver who San Antonio police said followed an officer through the downtown area and purposely rammed his patrol car has been taken into custody.
The situation came to an end before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in a parking lot in the 200 block of South Frio -- just steps away from SAPD's central substation.
According to a sergeant at the scene, the officer had been driving in the area when he noticed a Ford Mustang that appeared to be following him.
The officer then pulled into a parking lot and the Mustang followed him, police said.
The officer confronted the driver, demanding that he show his hands. Instead, the man rammed into the back of the officer's patrol car, police said.
At some point, the officer sent out an emergency tone on his radio, signaling that he needed help. More than half a dozen officers showed up at the scene.
Police said the driver put up a fight, but officers managed to handcuff him.
The man will be taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
Animal Care Services took custody of two dogs that were in the man's car.
