Man hospitalized after fall from embankment onto highway

Injured man was taken to University Hospital in serious condition

SAN ANTONIO – A man is in the hospital Wednesday morning after falling onto highway lanes from an embankment overnight, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. just north of downtown.

Police said the man may have been drinking and was walking along the top of an embankment over the lower level of Interstate 35 near San Pedro Avenue when he fell -- rolling onto the northbound lanes of the highway.

A driver passing by saw the man fall and stopped to help pull him out of the highway lanes, police said.

Both San Antonio police and emergency response crews responded to the call by the driver.

The injured man was taken to University Hospital in serious condition.

The highway was briefly closed as a result of the accident, but has since reopened.
