SAN ANTONIO – Just as jury selection in his trial on murder charges was to begin, Carlos Delosreyes pleaded guilty to the murder of Arturo Gutierrez.
Gutierrez was shot to death outside a convenience store in the 1500 block of Castroville Road on the night of Jan. 5, 2016.
Delosreyes was later arrested and charged with the murder.
On Monday, he plead guilty to the murder before 226th District Court Judge Sid Harle as part of a plea bargain. The plea calls for a maximum punishment not to exceed 35 years in prison.
Because Delosreyes has a criminal history, which includes drunk driving and weapons possession charges, he is considered a habitual criminal. As a result, the minimum punishment he faces is 25 years in prison.
Formal sentencing is set for April 8.
Delosreyes’ sister took exception to the plea.
“Two lives that are lost, my brother’s life getting sent to jail and that person who passed away,” she said. “But my brother is innocent.”
