Man shot, killed on his birthday

SAPD: Jacob Perales, 19, shot in face during possible drug deal

SAN ANTONIO – A man was found shot to death near his South Side home on the day he turned 19 years old.

San Antonio police said relatives discovered Jacob Perales shortly before 3 a.m Wednesday in the middle of Piedmont Avenue near Ada Street. They said the family members told them they went looking for him after he left home a few hours earlier to go for a walk. They became concerned when he didn't return home, police said.

According to a police report, officers who arrived at the scene found Perales in a large pool of blood. An officer at the scene said was shot in the face.

Although it's early in their investigation, detectives said it's possible the shooting was drug-related.

While detectives said they were unable to find any neighbors in the immediate area who heard gunshots, Jennifer Garza told KSAT 12 News she is sure she heard the gunfire. Garza's home is about a half-block from the scene.

"I woke up and believed that I didn't know what was going on," she said. "After that, I came outside to look. Didn't really see anything."

Garza said she later learned what happened from a news report. She said she was shocked to hear about this sort of the trouble in her neighborhood.

"To notice that something like this is going on in the neighborhood, it's really scary because you have children around here," Garza said. "We don't hear stuff like that here in this neighborhood. We don't hear gunshots."

Police are hoping to hear from someone who may have seen something.
