Man shot dead on city's South Side identified

Richard Jesse Sandoval, 24, shot and killed just before 4 a.m.

SAN ANTONIO – Richard Jesse Sandoval, 23, was shot and killed in front of his parents’ South Side home Tuesday morning within minutes of stepping outside, San Antonio police said.

According to a preliminary police report, officers responded to a 911 called shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday and found relatives of Sandoval asking for help. They said they found Sandoval lying in the street.

Detectives knocked on doors and questioned people in the neighborhood. They also took several people, including Sandoval’s girlfriend, to their offices for further questioning.

The police report said the girlfriend told investigators that Sandoval had been hanging out with a group of people just outside the home. She said he briefly came into the home, then went outside again. Less than a minute later, she heard multiple gunshots, the report said.

Outside the home later in the morning, Sandoval’s mother greeted relatives and friends and spoke about what had happened. Although she declined to be interviewed on camera, she said that her son’s girlfriend had woken her up, telling her that someone outside was beating Sandoval.

His mother said she found out from a neighbor later that he had been shot. She said she found her son on the ground, gasping for what would be his last breaths.

Early on in the investigation, police said witnesses reported seeing a black truck leaving the scene. Later they said they were unsure whether the truck or other vehicles may have been involved.

As of 10:30 a.m., police said they did not have any suspect information to release. They also did not reveal the suspected motive for the shooting.
