Man shot during home invasion at NW Side apartment complex

SAPD: Shooting at The Place at Oak Hills Apartments was not random

SAN ANTONIO – A man was critically wounded after he was shot during a home invasion early Thursday at a Northwest Side apartment.

When police arrived to investigate a report of a robbery in progress at The Place at Oak Hills Apartments in the 2300 block of Northwest Military Drive around 5 a.m., they found a man in a third-floor unit suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Police said the man and a woman were asleep in bed when two people barged into their apartment and shot him. The woman was not injured, police said.

"We do not believe it was a random act," San Antonio police Sgt. Steven Bratina said.

Something was apparently taken from the unit, but Bratina didn't elaborate on what it was.

Breanna Montsillo, an apartment resident, said she heard two gunshots. Montsillo said what was normally a quiet community has changed quite a bit. She said she hears a lot of arguments in the parking lots.

San Antonio police said they've received about 90 calls to the complex in the past five months, compared to 30 in the same period in 2014.

"You want your kids to play out in the playground, and especially seeing that it (shooting) was right here, it's kind ... unsettling," Montsillo said.
