Police say the man took the Acadian ambulance from the parking lot of a northwest side hospital around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

The man had been at University Hospital and was being transferred to the Nix Hospital in the 1500 block of Babcock Road.

Police say the man took off on foot from the Nix Hospital and saw an ambulance in the parking lot that had just dropped off a patient.

They say the man took the ambulance and drove away, but a police helicopter spotted the stolen ambulance on Fredericksburg Road and began following it.

Police say the man drove up Babcock to 410, then to Vance Jackson, back to Babcock and again on Vance Jackson.

Officers finally stopped the man near I-10 West and took him into custody.

They say the man was not hurt and did not damage the ambulance.
