Man steals car, leaves ID behind

Surveillance video also captured crime

SAN ANTONIO – A car was stolen during a test drive over Memorial Day Weekend, but not before the suspect left behind some big clues.

Not only did surveillance video capture the crime, and the dealership has a copy of an ID, the owner says he has seen the stolen luxury sedan driving around.

On Saturday evening, manager Carlos Gonzalez was working at Auto Blvd. when he realized someone had just stolen a car from the lot.

A salesman showing a man a car had asked the prospective customer to wait while he finished up with another customer.

After a walk around, surveillance video shows the man got inside for a test drive.

But instead of waiting, he had another idea.

"He liked the car apparently, so much that he took it,” Gonzalez said. “I still don't understand, why you would try to do that when you've given all your personal information?"

Left behind was a copy of a state ID provided by the driver.

The owner of the car dealership, who declined a formal interview, said he went to the address on the card, where the people inside said the man did live there, but that they had not seen him in several weeks.

In the days since, people associated with the dealership have seen the 2010 Infiniti G37 three different times.

“He goes 'Oh my god, the guy is over here, is he going to turn it in over here or something?" Said Gonzalez.

The business owner, who counts for one of those times, said he lost the vehicle while following it. In a separate instance, 911 dispatch told the pursuer to back off for his safety.

In a statement, San Antonio police said, in part, they appreciate the help but they, "highly recommend that people do not contact suspects."

Now Gonzalez is hoping the public will be able to help him find the car, before it is gone for good.
