Mayor Taylor gives state of the city address; calls SA 'city with heart'

SAN ANTONIO – Mayor Ivy Taylor called San Antonio “a city with heart” at Wednesday afternoon’s annual state of the city address. She spoke about how far the city has come and the plans for the future. As the mayoral election nears, Taylor’s opponents have a different outlook on what the city is today.

Taylor said the outlook for San Antonio is great.

“Contrary to some accounts, the evidence shows that not only is the state of our city incredibly strong, but the future of our city is blindingly bright,” Taylor said.

During Wednesday’s event, colleagues credited Taylor for leading the way on SA Tomorrow, the 2017 city bond, which includes improvements to streets and drainage, and for negotiating a police contract after a two-year stalemate.

"Our agreement saves taxpayer dollars (and) provides appropriate wage increase for our brave officers who work hard for our citizens every day. Acting with our convictions, we got a deal done," Taylor said.

Mayoral candidate Manuel Medina said the mayor should be focusing on San Antonio today and not on the million people who are projected to come into the city over the next 25 years.

“What about the 1.5 million that live here today. Our jobs, our safety, our infrastructure, starting with the number one issue, which is public safety. Under her watch, we become one of the most dangerous cities in America,” Medina said.

District 8 councilman and mayoral candidate Ron Nirenberg released this statement Wednesday:

“Today’s speech was more of what we’ve come to expect from Mayor Taylor – glossing over her failures on traffic, crime and ethics while taking credit for others’ hard work and successes on job creation and economic growth.”

The mayoral election will take place May 6.
