New Braunfels police were called to the family’s home on March 27. When officers arrived they found Nieves dead up stairs.

George Coryell was charged with murder in the days following the shooting.

During an interview with police Jennifer Coryell told police her son would instigate violence in the home and hit her with a small baseball bat.

However, after interviewing the two other children in the home at the time, their accounts were very different than their mother’s.

The kids said their mom instigated the violence and would shout expletives at them. They also told police they heard their mother shout “shoot him” before Nieves was shot. The kids then said they hid in their rooms fearing they would be shot next.

Interviews with friends of Nieves’ also revealed threatening texts the teen sent saying his stepfather, George Coryell, was going to kill him.

According to the affidavit, police determined Nieves was “in a very hostile and antagonizing home atmosphere in the weeks/months leading up to his death.”
