New area code assigned to San Antonio

726 area code to go into effect in October 2017

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio will get a new area code in October 2017, the Public Utility Commission of Texas said Thursday.

Growth in the San Antonio area has created a demand for more 210 phone numbers than the area code will allow, and therefore the 726 area code will be added, PUC said.

Current residents will get to keep their 210 number. New customers will get a 210 or 726 area code, PUC said.

When the new area code is assigned, beginning in October 2017, residents will have to dial 10 digits to make a call.

Residents affected by the new area code include almost all of Bexar County and small portions of Atascosa, Comal, Guadalupe, Medina and Wilson counties.

A map of the affected area can be found here.
