NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A New Braunfels teen was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler on Interstate 35 Friday morning, New Braunfels police said.

Police investigators said witnesses told them the unidentified 17-year-old pulled his pickup truck over on the grassy median in the 3900 block of Interstate 35 North around 8:15 a.m., then intentionally walked in front of a southbound 18-wheeler near the Walmart distribution center near Kohlenberg Road.

Emergency crews were called but were unable to save the teen's life, and a justice of the peace declared him dead. The teen's identity was not released, pending the notification of his next of kin.

New Braunfels police said the driver of the 18-wheeler, a 52-year-old man from Indiana, was uninjured in the accident and will not be charged.

The southbound lanes of I-35 were closed during the accident investigation. As of 11:30 a.m., the highway had re-opened.
