No recall election for city of Floresville

What's next for the city of Floresville?

SAN ANTONIO – After more than 500 signatures were verified, the Floresville City Council was still able to get out of a recall election.

There was standing room only during a council meeting Thursday night. Most of those in attendance supported a recall election for Mayor Sherry Castillo and City Councilmen Daniel Tejada and Juan Ortiz.

In a 3-2 vote, the City Council voted against setting a date for a public hearing, a key requirement for any recall election.

With a Feb. 19 deadline looming, a recall is no longer possible.

"In this case, it's just because the petition wasn't submitted in a timely manner to take into account that all of the individual timeline requirements of the charter were set to their maximum extent," Floresville City Attorney Chris Hugg said.

Those who signed the petition did not get the result they were looking, but they are hoping that come November, they will see a change.

"It's very disappointing," Floresville resident Mary Helen Tieken said. "In the fall, we are going to have a very big election, and we need to pursue this with all our might."

With the recall issue now behind them, others are just hoping for a better Floresville in the future.
