Officers shoot, kill man on East Side

Man killed near Karen Ln. and Corinne Dr.

SAN ANTONIO – A man who police said opened fire on an officer during a chase near the city's East Side is dead.

San Antonio Police Chief Anthony Trevino said an officer tried to make a traffic stop Wednesday evening when the driver took off in the car.

The officer located the vehicle at a Walmart located on Loop 410 near Rigsby in another attempt to stop the driver for a second time, but the man got out of his vehicle and threatened the officer.

"The individual started screaming that he's got a gun and was pulling something out of a bag the officer already had his gun drawn but because of the crowd and the number of people around him rather than fire on the individual he retreated back to his vehicle," Trevino said.

The driver then returned to his vehicle and took off again.

The officer immediately put out the vehicle description and followed the man, first from the patrol car, then with the help of the police department's helicopter.

Trevino said during the chase the man opened fire at the patrol car.

The chase ended when the man wrecked his vehicle in a residential area near Karen Lane and Corinne Drive, police said.

When officers began to approach the vehicle the man fired shots at police units again.

Trevino said officers returned fired, shooting and killing the man.

The man's identity has not been released.
