PREVIEW STORY:

The race for the U.S. 23rd Congressional District seat went past midnight with incumbent Republican Will Hurd holding a lead over challenger Pete Gallego.

As of 12 a.m. Wednesday, Hurd held a lead of around 5,000 votes with 79 percent of precincts reporting.

Gallego was trying to unseat Hurd in the sprawling district that extends from San Antonio to El Paso along the Mexico border.

The two faced one another four years ago when Hurd won by just over 2,500 votes.

At Hurd's campaign headquarters on the far Northwest Side, an excited crowd awaited the final results as of 10 p.m. They also felt very confident.

Hurd's early vote totals were solid even in El Paso which was expected to go in Gallego's direction.

Gallego's supporters in downtown San Antonio awaited word as well.

Gallego was expected to speak to his supporters before the final results were announced late Tuesday night.
