From eight candidates to two, the runoff for District 6 is heating up as Election Day draws closer.
Councilman Ray Lopez has termed out, so candidates Greg Brockhouse and Melissa Cabello Havrda are in the running to represent the sprawling Northwest and West Side district. The top two candidates shared with KSAT 12 News their future plans and why they believe they're the best fit for the job.
Both are eager to lead a growing District 6. They each have different starting points to tackle what they feel are the biggest concerns of the constituents.
“Unfortunately, the city is economically segregated, and District 6 is a good example of that. We go just inside Alamo Ranch down to Edgewood, it’s very diverse. We need to work on job training, boost economic development within the district and bring higher paying jobs to make sure everyone is included,” Cabello Havrda said.
Cabello Havrda's first priority is education and growing economic opportunities, while Brockhouse is looking at neighborhoods and public safety.
"It begins with public safety — police officer and firefighter support. We need more police officers and more firefighters, faster response times, so we got to work on that first and foremost. Then we get to streets and drainage, sidewalks. Making sure we are taking care of the basics — animal control services and code compliance,” Brockhouse said.
Both candidates are encouraging residents to get out and vote. They continue to block walk and try to convince voters why they would be the best choice to represent the district.
"I’m a collaborator in a consensus builder. If I am elected to City Hall, I have to go there and get six votes to get anything done for the residents of District 6. It’s something that I have. It’s a talent that I have to offer to this district that I grew up in, and I'm ready for the opportunity to do that,” Cabello Havrda said.
"I’ve been a chief of staff at City Hall. I’ve been a constituent services manager. I'm a military Air Force veteran. I’m a small business owner. I've managed and led people. Those things are indispensable when it comes to going down to City Hall, managing a staff and getting the work done,” Brockhouse said.
Early voting ends Tuesday and runoff elections are on June 10.
