Pound of pot found near man shot dead in East Side home, police say

Medical examiner still working to identify victim

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is still working to identify a man who was shot dead inside an East side home during an apparent drug deal.

San Antonio police officers found him in the kitchen of the home, which is located in the 4100 block of Laura Jean. At the time, they were responding to a call they had received shortly before 9:30 p.m. Thursday about shots fired in the area.

Within minutes, investigators had found a possible motive.

"Along with his body there, there was a large amount of hydroponic marijuana and also a trail out to the cul de sac,” said Lt. Dave Berrigan with SAPD.

He said the marijuana weighed about a pound and was packed in a dry-sealed plastic bag.

That evidence, along with a scale found in the home, told investigators there was drug dealing going on inside the home, Berrigan said.

"Nothing good comes out of drugs and we saw that tonight. The family is distraught," he said.

In the driveway, police found a car with its window shot out and the engine still running. They questioned the owner as well as several other people but did not arrest any of them.

Police said the person who made the original 911 call had been inside the home. He told investigators he left as soon as he heard gunshots.

"He jumped out the window when the shooting started,” said Berrigan. “He has no idea who did the shooting."
