Rosie Castro discusses raising sons Julian, Joaquin as single mom

Rosie Castro says education was always top priority

SAN ANTONIO – The mother of two rising stars in the Democratic Party, Rose Castro raised her sons as a single parent.

Castro said she is proud of her sons, Joaquin and Julian, and all of their political accomplishments.

Castro is an educator and a political and community activist. She said she has always made education a top priority in her home.

"If parents are willing to play their part at home, to look at their homework, read to the kids or have the kids read to them ... when they see a parent doing that, then they recognize education is important," she said.

Castro said her sons have taught her a lot along the way and credits the men for helping her quit a bad habit.

"The schools really started enforcing with the kids not to smoke and the kids would come home and say, "Why do you smoke?" So they bugged me about it and sure enough, I finally did give up smoking," she said.

As a single parent, Castro said she struggled at times, but that faith is something that she and all parents should have.

"Things will be better ... there's always a tomorrow and that you have faith in yourself, and God and in your children. You'll find a way around some of the obstacles," Castro said.

With the speculation that Joaquin Castro or Julian Castro could be tapped as a 2016 vice presidential candidate, Rosie Castro said it is still too early to know what will happen but that she feels both are ready for the job if called upon.
