SAN ANTONIO – The Salvation Army of San Antonio said it has canceled an upcoming appearance with NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin.

The announcement comes after a Florida woman accused Irvin of sexual assault, the Salvation Army of San Antonio said.

Irvin was scheduled to headline the organization's annual luncheon May 9. The Salvation Army said it is scrambling for a replacement speaker before one of its biggest annual fundraisers.

"The timing of this is very unfortunate. We were excited about the opportunity to bring Michael Irvin to San Antonio," said Brad Mayhar, public relations manager for the Salvation Army of San Antonio.

Mayhar said the cancellation is not a reflection of whether the organization believes Irvin is guilty or innocent.

"Because of the programs we run and the services that we provide to women and families in need, we believe this is just not the right time to partner with Mr. Irvin while an investigation of this nature is pending," Mayhar said. "The Salvation Army has a long association with the Dallas Cowboys and Michael Irvin, and we wish Mr. Irvin the best."

The Salvation Army said it hopes to announce a replacement speaker within the next few days.
