1 dead, 2 wounded in apparent crime spree on Northwest Side

SAPD: 1 man may be to blame for victimizing half a dozen people

SAN ANTONIO – What appears to be a crime spree that targeted people on the city’s North and Northwest Sides has resulted in the death of one victim. A staff member at the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Tuesday morning that a man who was shot inside a convenience store has died from his wounds.

San Antonio police said both that man and a woman were shot late Monday night by someone who drove up and barged into the store, located in the 2800 block of Blanco Road.

“Both victims were trying to hold the door shut in preventing the suspect from getting inside the store,” said Officer Douglas Greene, a public information officer for SAPD. “That suspect managed to open the door. He shot both victims point blank in the chest."

Police said both victims were in their 60s. At last check, the woman was in critical condition. The medical examiner did not release the name right away of the man who was killed.

Greene said those two victims were among several people targeted in a series of crimes that began around 10 p.m. Monday with another shooting.

Police were called to the 200 block of Viendo Street where they found a victim in critical condition and suffering from a gunshot wound. They said that person was shot during a robbery.

A short time later, police received calls about robberies near Interstate 10 and Huisache, and on Sacramento Street, as well as a carjacking in the 2400 block of West Avenue.

Around the same time, they were dispatched to the convenience store on Blanco Road and found the two gunshot victims there.

Greene said detectives are investigating the possibility that these cases all are connected, committed by the same person.

“We feel pretty strongly that the robbery, the carjacking that took place on West Avenue, that was the same vehicle that the suspect fled in when he came to (the Blanco) location,” he said.

The description of the robber in some of the cases also contained some similarities, Greene said.

Although officers surrounded the neighborhood where the deadly shooting happened, the shooter was able to escape.  Police said he was last seen driving away in a silver, four-door Kia.

Anyone with information about any of the crimes is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP (7867).
