SAPD: Officer shoots, kills man during chase

Shooting reported behind John Jay High School

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer shot and killed a man Friday afternoon on the city's West Side.

According to SAPD Chief Anthony Trevino, the shooting came after a foot chase that ended behind John Jay High School in the 7100 block of Marbach Road.

Trevino said officers were conducting surveillance in the area when a marked unit pulled over a car for a traffic violation.

After the man pulled over, he jumped out of his car and ran, Trevino said.

An undercover officer chased the man, who at one point jumped onto the detective's car, Trevino said.

The man then attempted to jump over a fence. As he did, a gun fell out of the his waistband, Trevino said. When the man reached to grab it, the officer fired three shots, hitting the man in the head and chest.

"We're still in the process of identifying him. The individuals that were in the vehicle are giving us very limited information right now. I can tell you he's a Hispanic male, but we don't know his background or what his criminal history may be," Trevino said.

A spokesperson for the school district said no teachers or students were in the school at the time of the shooting.
