SAN ANTONIO –
A 54-year-old man was arrested on a murder charge following what San Antonio police have labeled as a road-rage shooting.
The victim, a 40-year-old man, was shot in the head, police said. As of noon Monday, the medical examiner had not made a positive identification on him.
The suspect, Chris Gomez, was booked into the Bexar County Jail late Sunday night.
Police said they found Gomez trying to hide inside a home in the 6200 block of Slate Valley on the city's Southwest Side. He did not put up a struggle when officers found him.
"We got tips from the public, and we talked to some other people, who were able to point us out to his location," said Sgt. Jesse Salame, an SAPD spokesman. "I don't know what kind of statement he provided. But again, this wasn't just another senseless act. Something that's totally avoidable."
Salame said it isn't clear what the dispute was about, but it happened as Gomez and the victim were driving along Loop 410 in the Ray Ellison Drive area.
"They exited the freeway and they were on the access road coming up to Ray Ellison, where the victim got out of his vehicle. And the suspect shot and killed him," Salame said.
Early in the investigation, officers at the scene said it appeared that the victim had approached the suspect's car after they both stopped at a red light. They said he knocked on the window of Gomez's car, and that is when Gomez shot him.
KSAT 12 News attempted to speak with someone at Gomez's home Monday morning. A woman there declined, saying that the version of the story being aired by local news outlets was incorrect.
Police said the incident is still under investigation.
