SAN ANTONIO – An officer armed with his sidearm, bulletproof vest and a semi-automatic rifle stood outside the Public Safety Headquarters Sunday, just hours after a gunman launched a volley of bullets at the building.
The vast majority of the damage was sustained on the fourth and fifth floors of the parking garage.
“Headquarters has been shot before, but not in close relationship to anything that’s happened like up in Dallas,” Police Chief William McManus said.
No one was injured in the shooting, which was reported just before 10 p.m. Saturday.
Several officers inside the building said they heard gunshots hitting the building.
McManus said police did find several shell casings in an alley near the old Public Safety Headquarters and a restaurant.
The chief also said his department would work hard to track down whoever fired the shots. "We are not going to be targets, and we're not going to allow our officers to be targets," McManus said. "This is not open season on police officers here in San Antonio or anywhere else."
Police did release a general description of a suspect they are looking for. Police are looking for a man seen running from the area in an orange shirt and navy blue pants.
The Police Department’s headquarters is located at 315 South Santa Rosa.
The shooting comes days after a gunman ambushed Dallas police officers, killing five and wounding several more.
