Stolen SUV slams into home leaving man trapped inside

Bystanders come to aid of elderly man

SAN ANTONIO – A North Side homeowner was taken to a local hospital as a precaution after being trapped in his home when a stolen SUV crashed into the structure.

San Antonio police said a vehicle crashed into the man's home, whose family has identified as Jack Weatherford. Investigators are still looking for whoever was driving the stolen vehicle.

The home in the 200 block of Tammy Drive was severely damaged.

"When I pulled up I saw the fence was like busted (open) and the vehicle was over there. It was a white SUV. It was a Honda Pilot," Allied Universal security guard Jewel Jefferson said.

Jefferson is credited by Weatherford's family as making the wreck scene discovery.

"He just kept saying, 'Help. Help.' Only thing he was saying that he was there for like four to five hours just laying there," Jefferson said.

Within minutes, the security guard and another person determined Weatherford, 84, needed aid.

"His wheelchair got crushed," the homeowner's son-in-law, Chuck Cervantes, said. "He has heart problems and emphysema, so he's on oxygen. So all that time he's been off oxygen so it's been tough."

Cervantes said his father-in-law's bed was knocked across the room during the crash.

Although Weatherford believed he was trapped for hours, his family now believes it was a much shorter time span. No crash witnesses have been located, according to Jefferson and Cervantes.

"He was just laying there like he was like helpless so automatically I had to make that call. I had to call 911," Jefferson said.

Weatherford is expected to be OK.

"Thank you so very much," Cervantes said. "He (Jefferson) was truly vigilant and made sure that the scene was followed up."

The San Antonio Police Department vehicle crimes unit is investigating the case. When officers arrived on scene the driver of the SUV was nowhere to be found and no arrests have been made.
