Man arrested after stealing ammunition from Helotes Walmart

Suspect caught in area of Loop 1604 and Hausman Rd after chase

HELOTES, Texas – Police said they arrested a man who ran out of a Helotes WalMart store with thousands of rounds of ammunition early Friday morning.

Police in Helotes said the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, got away in a neighborhood about two miles from the store.

The police had been called to the business in the 12500 block of Leslie Road, near Bandera Road, around 2:30 a.m. Friday. Officers at the scene said the man jimmed open the glass case, grabbed 2,500 rounds of ammunition, and ran out to a waiting SUV.

Police quickly were on his tail, chasing him throughout the area near Loop 1604 and Bandera. Finally, he came to a stop in a cul de sac in the 12900 block of Essen Forest. 

The man jumped out of his car, scaled a fence and disappeared into a drainage ditch, police said. Police said they used a helicopter and police dog to search for him but the man escaped. Officers said they recovered all of the stolen ammunition.

The San Antonio Police Department assisted in the case and authorities caught the suspect around 4:45 a.m. in  the area of Loop 1604 and Hausman Road.

The name of the man arrested is not presently known.
