Fundraisers to be held this weekend to support fallen firefighter's family

Scott Deem tribute shirts honor firefighter's passion for working out

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department has set up an online T-shirt fundraiser to honor a fallen firefighter and support his family.

Scott Deem was killed May18 while battling a building fire a strip mall on Ingram Road.

The T-shirt highlights Deem's passion for training and working out to stay in shape, especially Crossfit and strength training, SAFD spokesman Woody Woodward said.

"We have a San Antonio Fire Department Crossfit program, and he was always participating in that. Some folks who used to work out with him thought about doing a T-shirt for what they call 'the workout of the day, or WOD.' So we kind of took that one step further and decided to offer a shirt to the general public," Woodward said.

The front of the T-shirt reads "SAFDeem, He was the best of us," and also has the date of his final alarm.

The back of the shirt features crossed axes and the initials SD.

The shirt can be purchased by clicking here.

All proceeds from the shirt will go to Deem's wife and three children, Woodward said.

There are two more fundraisers to benefit Deem's family this weekend.

A fundraiser will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Little Woodrow's in Stone Oak. Proceeds from the sale of Fireman's 4 Ale will be donated to Deem's family.

"We have T-shirt sales, we have food, were going to have games, we're going to have a corn hole tournament, we have a silent auction where things are going to be auctioned off that day," said San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association public relations chairman Bobby Ford.

On Sunday, there will be a barbecue plate sale to benefit the families of Deem and injured firefighter Brad Phipps. The event will be held at 2 p.m. at Cooter Brown's Saloon at 11881 Bandera Road. Plates will be sold for $10. There will be a silent auction and five live bands performing at the event.

Both of the fundraisers are meant to not only to help the families financially but also to help with the healing process.

"It's going to take a while, a long while, but we are going to pull together as families do and support each other and try to move forward and we're going to do so supporting Scott's family and Brad Phipps' family. We'll be strong, we'll be strong together," Ford said.

Donations can also be made online at Generations Federal Credit Union.
