DPS troopers find gun, marijuana after traffic stop on West Side

Driver arrested after foot chase

SAN ANTONIO – A traffic stop on the West Side has led to a lot of trouble for a driver. San Antonio police said a handgun and marijuana were found inside his car.

The driver also is accused of leading Department of Public Safety troopers and police officers on a foot chase that ended about a half mile from where it started.

Police said a trooper initiated the traffic stop on W. Military near Highway 90 before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. He soon found a small amount of marijuana and a handgun inside the man's car, police said.

The trooper then handcuffed the driver but he somehow managed to run away.

SAPD officers, using their Eagle helicopter, assisted in the search for the suspect. Officers found him at an apartment complex about a half mile away and took him into custody.

Police said the suspect began complaining about having trouble breathing but his problems stemmed from him running from officers.

An SAPD canine unit also was brought in to search the suspect's car.
