Video shows Holmes HS cross-country team surprising elderly man with new shoes

Manfred has been running at Husky Track for nearly a decade

SAN ANTONIO – The Holmes High School cross-country team on Thursday morning presented a new pair of running shoes to a man who has been running at the school every morning for nearly a decade.

The Husky Track Twitter page posted a video showing the team surprising the man, whose name is Manfred, with the shoes, bringing him to tears as he opens the box.

The team tweeted: “made manfred an official member of the cross country team today!”

Cross-country assistant coach Faith Barlow said she remembers Manfred running at the school since she was a student there.

After being given the shoes, Manfred is seen in the video wiping his eyes, saying, “You’re kidding me!”

Barlow said Manfred initially asked one of the runners before the team’s morning run where he bought his shoes and if they were a solid running pair.

Barlow said the school has a partnership with the Brooks running shoe company and was able to give Manfred a pair of the team’s official shoes.

“I used to run five miles a day for 40 years,” Manfred said as he opened the box.

When this article was posted, the video had been retweeted more than 260 times and liked more than 340 times.
