Surveillance footage shows District 2 councilman sleeping on bench

SAN ANTONIO

Surveillance footage released Wednesday afternoon shows City Councilman Alan Warrick sleeping on a bench outside of City Hall.

The footage comes after Warrick claimed he was drugged at a downtown bar last Thursday while he was out with friends, but recanted a day after making that claim.

The video begins at 6:04 a.m. with Warrick sitting on a bench, resting for a moment, then kicking his feet up and napping for 20 minutes before he is awakened by what appears to be two security guards.

At 6:29 a.m., Warrick returns to the bench and lays back down for a minute, then leaves city hall.

A city spokesperson said the city would not release other angles of the incident due to security concerns.

Warrick, who is running for re-election in District 2, said in a statement last Friday that he was drugged while celebrating a friend's birthday at On The Rocks pub on May 25. Warrick revised his statement on Saturday after he and the bar owner went over security footage from that night, confirming that no one drugged his drink.

"I apologize to the people of District 2. I apologize to the bar owner. I will go back to his establishment and maybe we can do some kind of event to bring awareness to the issue I thought was happening," Warrick told KSAT 12 on Saturday.

Warrick couldn't say how many drinks he had that night, but said he has never had that "type of reaction" to alcohol consumption and blamed his actions on drinking on an empty stomach.

"It's embarrassing," Warrick said in a separate statement Wednesday afternoon. "I've never had this type of physical reaction to alcohol before. I take full responsibility for my actions and apologize to my family and my constituents. I assure everyone that nothing like this will happen again."

The councilman will face off with William Cruz Shaw in the runoff election for his District 2 seat.

Shaw sent the following statement to KSAT in response to Warrick's actions:

“I’m calling on Councilman Warrick to withdraw from this race. His actions over the last two days have been utterly unacceptable. District 2’s council representative drank excessively Thursday night and passed out in front of City Hall. To cover his tracks, he lied, making up a wild story about being drugged and dragged to the bench outside City Hall.

“Councilman Warrick is deeply troubled. He should get the help he clearly needs, for his own sake and that of his family.

"District 2 has many needs, and Alan Warrick has failed to meet them. We can’t afford to have a City Council member who’s erratic, ineffective, and distracted by his own problems.”
