Volunteers place thousands of wreaths at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

Grave sites of fallen veterans adorned with wreaths for holiday season

SAN ANTONIO – Thousands of grave sites of fallen veterans are now adorned with wreaths for the holiday season.

Volunteers placed more than 19,000 wreaths Saturday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. The green wreaths, each with a red bow, are a gesture of gratitude.

The event hits close to home for one volunteer who created an organization at just 11-years-old, after noticing her grandfather's grave site, along with hundreds more, weren't decorated for the holidays.

"When you see the wreaths filling the cemetery, it just, you can't help but smile. It's just an amazing feeling," said Jayci Derby, of Jayci's Wreaths for Heroes.

The wreaths placed at Fort Sam were among more than 900,000 wreaths placed at more than 1,000 locations nationwide, which is National Wreaths Across America Day.
