Woman recalls phone call with victim of horrific Highway 90 crash

Cassandra Colon was talking to boyfriend, Calvin Mosley, when he crashed

SAN ANTONIO – Cassandra Colon was prepared to talk about almost anything with her boyfriend, Calvin Mosley. The couple routinely kept in touch by phone every morning while she was out of town and he was on his way to work. Last Wednesday morning, Colon said she heard the most unexpected sound — what she thought might be the last to come from Mosley.

"I heard him screaming, and then I heard the tires careening,” she said. "And then he basically said, 'I'm dead. I love you.'"

Colon, who was halfway across the country visiting her daughter in Washington, D.C., said she immediately began to pray. She knew what she heard over the phone line was Mosley having an accident. However, what she didn’t know at the time was how bad it was.

According to San Antonio police, the 39-year-old was heading east on Highway 90 shortly before 5 a.m. when his car hydroplaned on a rain-slick road. The car then hit a guardrail and split in half.

The half with Mosley still inside plunged to the ground near Leon Creek.

"Then after, it was just really quiet, and I kept saying, 'Hello? Hello?' And then it just disconnected," Colon said.

Mosley suffered major injuries to his head and body. Colon said even Mosley himself didn’t think he’d survive.

It turns out that he and many other people were wrong, though.

After three separate surgeries, Mosley is beginning the long road to recovery, Colon said. She believes it’s a miracle he survived.

"I just knew that that was nothing but God," she said. “God has something in store for him still. There are still things for him to do in this life. And so it just wasn't his time."

Colon said Mosley hopes other people will look at his ordeal as a warning to drive safely, especially in inclement weather. She said Mosely wants to caution other drivers to take it slow, even drive below the speed limit when it’s raining.
