Animal Care Services optimistic despite ‘no kill' numbers

April and May numbers drop below 90 percent

SAN ANTONIO – Animal Care Services has seen its number of animal euthanizations increase.

To attain the coveted “no kill” status at least 90 percent of the animals that enter a city’s shelter must leave alive, but that does not mean that no animals are euthanized.

In December ACS reached their no kill goal, but in April and May the numbers fell to 89 percent.

“Every spring and early summer we know we’re going to get slammed with puppies and kittens, and sure enough that is what happened,” said ACS spokesperson Lisa Norwood. “We had over 600 animals come in last week alone.”

To counter the influx ACS launched an aggressive foster and adoption campaign over the weekend. Norwood said that it was a success as over 200 pets were either adopted or fostered.

She said their hope is that those numbers continue to soar.

“The way we do that is with the public’s help -- not just with people like you and I but also with our shelter groups and shelters that we work with,” she said.
