How to prepare for running a marathon

SAN ANTONIO – Thinking about running a marathon?

Dr. Bob Wilson, with the Greater San Antonio Emergency Physicians and a marathoner himself, gave some advice to runners.

Anyone with a basic level of fitness can become a runner.

“After 16 or 18 weeks of careful training, anybody, whether they think so or not, can finish a marathon,” Wilson said.

In order to avoid injury, it’s important to start with the right equipment.

Wilson recommended visiting a local running store to talk with an expert. Good shoes with arch support, running socks, and proper running clothes are a must.

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is changing up something about their running routine the day of the race. Don’t wear new shoes or try any new foods or exercises right before race day.

If practiced in moderation, there are many benefits to running.

“It lowers your blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose control, and makes you feel good,” Wilson said.
