The Dr. Is In: The connection between sports and medicine

SAN ANTONIO – UT Health San Antonio's Dr. Randal Robinson believes in a connection between sports and medicine.Ā

"Basketball is kind of like medicine in a lot of ways," Robinson said. "You really have to have teamwork, (with) some people leading the team."

Robinson said basketball supports his mission as a doctor and forges stronger bonds with his family.Ā

"I started playing basketball when I was in second or third grade," he said. "Basketball is something we've all done together as a family."

His daughter, Rachel, shares his sentiment.

"We would have practice once a week, and it was good father-daughter time," Rachel said.Ā

Robinson also emphasized the importance of his service in the Army.Ā

According to UT Health San Antonio's website, Robinson ā€œserved on active duty in the US Army Medical Corps and retired at the rank of Colonel after more than 26 years of service.ā€

After retiring from the military, Robinson joined the team at UT Health San Antonio in 2011. He now is a physician for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology Division.

Ā

ā€œUT Health San Antonio is an absolutely fabulous way to work,ā€ Robinson said.
