The Dr. Is In: The connection between sports and medicine

SAN ANTONIO – UT Health San Antonio's Dr. Randal Robinson believes in a connection between sports and medicine.

"Basketball is kind of like medicine in a lot of ways," Robinson said. "You really have to have teamwork, (with) some people leading the team."

Robinson said basketball supports his mission as a doctor and forges stronger bonds with his family.

"I started playing basketball when I was in second or third grade," he said. "Basketball is something we've all done together as a family."

His daughter, Rachel, shares his sentiment.

"We would have practice once a week, and it was good father-daughter time," Rachel said.

Robinson also emphasized the importance of his service in the Army.

According to UT Health San Antonio's website, Robinson “served on active duty in the US Army Medical Corps and retired at the rank of Colonel after more than 26 years of service.”

After retiring from the military, Robinson joined the team at UT Health San Antonio in 2011. He now is a physician for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology Division.

“UT Health San Antonio is an absolutely fabulous way to work,” Robinson said.
