SAN ANTONIO – Tonight’s Valero Alamo Bowl between Oklahoma State and Colorado is a bit of a homecoming for several former San Antonio-area high school football standouts.
Eight players on Oklahoma State’s roster, including four starters on defense, played their high school football in the San Antonio area.
Three of those players; Jordan Sterns, Vincent Taylor and Tre Flowers -- earned All-Big 12 honors this season.
Cowboys punter and Medina Valley High School graduate Zach Sinor was also named to the All-Big 12 team.
Colorado has one player from San Antonio on its roster: former Churchill Charger offensive lineman Chance Lytle.
In recent years, San Antonio has become a hotbed for college football recruiting, especially for many Big 12 schools.
Three local seniors have verbally committed to Big 12 schools for the 2017 recruiting class.
Steele’s Xavier Martin verbally committed to Texas Tech, and Reagan’s Derek Kerstetter recently switched his commitment from Oklahoma State to Texas.
New Braunfels Canyon punter Reeves Mundschau verbally committed to Oklahoma.
The trend is not expected to end anytime soon, with several area 2018 players being recruited heavily by Power Five schools.
