SAN ANTONIO – With President Donald Trump having yet served his first full year in the Oval Office, opponents are already looking forward to his last with many calling for a Gregg Popovich-Steve Kerr presidential ticket in 2020.

Among the presumed supporters is Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton who drew social media attention when he wore a “Popovich-Kerr 2020” T-shirt at a volleyball tournament over the weekend in Del Mar, California.

The popular T-shirt - designed by illustrator Matthew Hollister from Seattle, Washington - is a result of incidents involving San Antonio Spurs head coach Popovich and Golden State Warriors head coach Kerr when they were outspoken against Trump’s presidency during the course of this year’s NBA season.

Walton’s choice of attire not only mirrored the support for the two head coaches to insert their names in the 2020 presidential ballot, but also spotlighting a movement that was created by “The Unofficial, Unsanctioned, and Unaffiliated Popovich-Kerr Presidential Exploratory Committee” four months ago.

According to the “Committee” website, the merchandise was created on behalf of the “American people (who) deserve better than our current political horror show. Who better than the two most beloved figures in the NBA?”

The “Popovich-Kerr 2020” themed T-shirts and coffee mugs not only earn a good knee-slapper but also contribute to a great cause by sending 100 percent of net proceeds to charity, according to the website.

In a tweet on the official Twitter account, the group shared they sold $13,409.51 worth of merchandise during the April-May period with $2,884.55 of the net proceeds going to charity after its processing and fulfillment charges.

Supporters of the Popovich-Kerr presidential bid also have the option of signing a petition that requires less than 100 signatures: Draft Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr for a presidential run.
