City unveils new Z-Crossing on Culebra Road

Part of plan to reduce pedestrian fatalities, officials say

SAN ANTONIO – City officials on Wednesday unveiled a new, safer cross walk along Culebra Road.

District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a new Z-Crossing near Rollins Avenue, which includes ramps, medians, solar-powered flashing lights and blinking warning signs.

"The new Z-Crossing on Culebra is a project in District 5 that embodies the belief that pedestrian fatalities are not only avoidable, but unacceptable," Gonzales said.

The project is part of the city's Vision Zero campaign, which aims to reduce the number of fatalities on public roads to zero, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Last year, 46 people lost their lives walking on San Antonio streets. Still, it's an improvement from 2015, when 54 pedestrians were killed. Most of the victims were adults walking at night, officials said.
